Do-It-Yourself Flooring Tips

We know that purchasing a new floor is a major financial decision but with the right care and maintenance
you can keep your floor looking new for a long time and it doesn't have to cost you a lot of money. Here are
some cost effective ways to prevent damage, maintain your floor, and repair potential damage.

PREVENTION

Stop grit and water from getting on the floor by placing appropriate mats in front of doors and beneath coat racks. Do not walk on the floor with stiletto heels or drag heavy objects across the floor. Inexpensive felt pads can be purchased at most hardware stores or online and attached under the legs of furniture to prevent scratching.

MAINTENANCE

If abrasive grit such as sand or rocks does get on the floor, remove it as quickly as possible but avoid using excess water. If visible moisture does not disappear within a few dozen seconds, the amount of water being used is excessive. Only use mild cleansers or water to remove stains and dry the floor afterward while avoiding hard or abrasive cleaning implements. Daily wiping with a Swiffer or other dry floor wiper is often the best option.

REPAIR

For minor scratches, you can often cover them up with coloured wood filler or a suitable stain pen. If larger scratches or water damage occur, give us a call and we can remove the appropriate pieces and replace them them for you without creating a mess or allowing the water damage to spread to other areas of the floor.
